The
Pilates Method
Pilates
(pronounced puh-lah-teez) is an exercise system that combines
strengthening, stretching, and alignment of
the whole body using specific equipment, supervised by
trained instructors. The Pilates Method was developed in the 1920s
by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates Studio
Joseph H. Pilates.

Benefits
Of The Pilates Method
The
Pilates Method is an energizing program that promotes physical
harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical condition.
Because sessions are done one on one with an instructor, they
are tailored to your specific needs. Dancers and athletes are
devoted to it, but most of the people who practice it are neither.
They are men and women, elderly and teenagers, all of whom benefit
from the increased strength, flexibility, and better posture without
building bulk. Recently discovered by physical therapists, chiropractors,
and orthopedists, Pilates can be integrated into rehabilitative
exercise and physical therapy programs designed to speed recovery
of injuries.

Differences
between Pilates And Other Methods
Joseph
H. Pilates designed over 500 exercises using unique equipment
to develop the body uniformly. Instead of performing many repetitions
of each exercise, you do a few, more precise movements that require
proper control and form. Because your mind is required to engage
with your body to perform the movements correctly, you become
more aware of your muscle function and control. Your abdomen,
lower back, and buttocks
(the “Powerhouse”) gain strength and support.
This enables your
body to move freely, protected from injury.

The
Pilates Instruction
A
certified Pilates instructor should have completed a rigorous
training program through the Authentic Pilates Studio of New York
City. The certification program has been continued by Master Teacher
Romana Kryzanowska. Ms. Kryzanowska is the sole inheritor of the
Pilates Method, as taught to her by the founder, Joseph H. Pilates.
I had the privilege of training and teaching under the tutelage
of Romana. As one of her top teacher/students, I was featured
in Romana ‘s only instructional video series.
